The Montana Capitol Restoration Foundation presents the 2011 Souvenir Ornament: The Cowboy.
The Cowboy was already romanticized as a dying breed by 1902, but he provided the foundation for the huge cattle industry that brought immense wealth to Montana. The figure is no one specific, but in his instructions to his artists, Governor Toole suggested that the Pedrettis study the cowboys in Charles M. Russell's paintings for inspiration. The Cowboy is the only anonymous figure among the four roundels.
