In the 1850s, Congress authorized & funded surveys to find the most practical route for a transcontinental railroad through the western frontier. Profiling the northernmost survey, along with the data assembled by numerous scientists and surveyors were two artists, John MIx Stanley and Gustavis Sohon, who documented the northern Great Plains and Pacific Northwest, with a particular eye for Indian life.
